January 01 A new year!Howdy. Wow. We really need to get some new photos up. I'll have to get right on that. :) We had such a fun day at church today and spending time with friends. We are so blessed. We are also super excited as it looks like it might be possible for both of us to go on a mission trip with our church in April. At about this point in the letter, I'll just mention for anyone that might be wondering.... 'No,we don't have kids yet.' This just makes me smile because everyone is almost as excited as we are about the prospect of our having children someday. We have lots of snow around here these days, and we're kind of enjoying.......not having to mow the lawn.
We're making lots of new friends as well as keeping the old. We visit with friends from Living Grace (whom Dallas has known his whole life) and of course from River Valley Community Church. We also have had my family from out of town come stay with us a few times and had our first family Thanksgiving at our house with people from both the Burnham and Alberts families. That was really fun.
We started a new tradition---Darla and I---of making a dinner on Christmas Day for our families and anyone who happens to be free that day. It was lots of fun. I'm already inviting people for next year. Wanna come?
Becky is still enjoying working at Green Barley Nutrition Center. Her hours there are still part-time but have increased and she will be moving more into the marketing/networking aspect of the business this year. Her bosses are a mom and daughter team who are Christians and just great people to work with. She is also doing her job every Thursday as a personal cook for a business woman and her retired parents.
Dallas is working still for ReBath and frequently installs bath and shower enclosures in Twin Falls, Emmett, or past Ontario. He even recently flew to Salt Lake City for a couple days to learn how to intall walk-in bathtubs for folks who are at risk for falling in the tub. Dallas is doing very well as an installer there. Although he doesn't plan to stay in that position for the rest of his life, his eye for detail pays off in less service calls to fix things later. Bosses tend to like that.
We added a few pictures from our Thanksgiving with family near Portland.
October 02 Reflecting on the summerWow! So really haven't written in here for quite a while. So much has happened since June. For one thing, I had one of the wierdest experiences yet in our new home. Usually Dallas and I start the story by saying I woke up screaming at 1pm in the morning. Dallas immediately woke up and went into Ninja mode ready to punch someone, but my problem was more delicate. I had a "terrible tickling" in my ear. He was trying to ask what was wrong, but every time I tried to start explaining, I would just start screaming and scratching at my ear again. It was truly a terrible feeling. I could not reach whatever was crawling around in my ear. Dallas jumped out of bed and firmly commanded me to get out of bed and come to the bathroom. He flipped on the bathroom light (he'd read on the www that bugs move towards light when they are in your ear) and pulled down on my ear lobe. He saw a tiny speck of black, but then his stomach turned as he saw a large beetle back out of my ear. He batted in onto the floor and covered it so I couldn't see what it was. (Sorry for those of you who have already heard this story) I was, of course, crying with horror and relief to have my ear back :) but I did want to see the culprit before Dallas flushed it down the toilet heroically. That is the first and last time I have seen a beetle in our house, much less in my ear. I rarely even see a spider. I am at a loss how it got there. Anyhoo, time is healing the memories and the summer moved on. We went up to Camp Ida-Haven for a week as usual in August and took a 12-yr-old and a 10-yr-old with us. It was great and the 12-yr-old accepted Jesus. Next year, we're trying to encourage their moms to come with them because Dallas and I are so busy with worship, sound, a photo shoot, etc. at camp. Dallas and I took our annual pilgrimage in a canoe out to the island where he proposed to me. He also swam to the island as usual. Darla and one of her friends, Dan, went out with us that time. My sister Lori and her family spent almost a week with us and her husband discovered fishing at Lake Lowell, about 10 mins. away. By the end of the trip, he was looking at real estate wanting to move out here. Lori and I loved a chance to hang out, and Kerissa (4) was full of darling antics as usual. Then Dad and Shan came for a weekend. Dad got to go to an old car show and catch up with some friends he has here in the area, including my father-in-law, who he thinks is the bomb. We always seem to get in deep discussions when he is here although I only plan to spoil them and let them have a fun time. Dallas had pink eye and was quarantined in his room the whole weekend they were here. Well, I guess that's it on personal notes about the summer for the time being. I won't hardly mention our garden, because it was a seat-of-the-pants operation and full of weeds this summer. We did get some fresh basil and a couple dahlias. I'm hoping to get it going better next year. We'll see. June 24 This Is the Required TitleJust finally put a little garden in today in our back yard. There are zucchini, basil, mint, and a bunch of flowers.
There are 121 kids in Vacation Bible School this year at RVCC. Wow! I really love being involved with that. I go from station to station with 8 kids.
Got home late Sunday night from mom's wedding celebration. I've been a little sick, and I was trying so hard not to cough during the ceremony that I had tears running down my cheeks. It's kind of funny now. Dallas cooked for most of 12 hours the day of the wedding to help my step dad who was the chef.
Dallas gets all kinds of customers at work replacing tub and shower enclosures. He just never knows what kind of customer he'll have that day or how long his day will end up being. He works anywhere from 4-14 hours a day--whatever it takes to finish the job.
Well, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, so that's it.
Bye all.
April 25 We're back!Hi everybody! We're back from Mazatlan and are just putting up a few pictures for you. We had the most wonderful and excellent vacation ever in our ocean front condo thanks to generous friends and our mileage plan. The view was incredible and the company was great =). The first day we took an island tour with Arnoldo with a gold tooth and party spirit. The second day we went body boarding again for the second and last time and spent some time at the hospital. The third day was my 34th birthday and Dallas's second day of only pureed soup through a straw. Disappointing when he knew there were all those good hot salsas out there. We went on a tour anyway the morning after his accident but he almost threw up on the bumpy ride home. We decided to take it quieter for the next couple days. That's when we took our walks on the beach and caught a couple movies. On Saturday, we hooked up with a mission group that was taking lunches to kids in the poorer area of Mazatlan and we have a couple short movies from there. They were a group from Ohio and all prayed for Dallas's back before we left. His back was messed up from the boarding accident. The kids were pretty incredible. In the poorest area, they were unabashedly mostly interested in any food or toys we had in our hands. In another area, we were told that most of the kids had single moms but they were hoping to raise up boys from their youth group who would stay with their families someday. Probably the most impacting moment for me was actually when the director told me maybe I shouldn't use the plastic netting bag the oranges came from to put the garbage in because the moms like to tear it into pieces and use them as dish rags to scrub their dishes. Then he offered it to one of the moms standing there and her face lit up like she had gotten a prize. That really got to me.
Let's see--what else? Well, we would highly recommend "Mazatlan Frank" as a tour guide and information source if anyone ever goes to Mazatlan. He was great. Our last couple days were just fun in the sun and packing up to go. We are choosing to forget the night spent on air mattresses in the San Francisco airport listening to someone speaking loudly in an undetermined language right next to our heads off and on all night. Also, if anyone else ever wants to spend the night in the SanFran airport, we would recommend getting the cleaning schedule for the bathrooms near you so you don't end up sleepwalking up and down escalators throughout the airport just to take a 3am potty break. That's all for now! January 29 End of January newsWow! Well, this is the most snow we've had in a long time. I have been at home reading up on my new little business since Dallas bought me a massage table this week. Dallas has been driving long distances for jobs this week in the snow. It looks like we're going to have some unexpeced time off within the next couple weeks and so we get to go see my extended family in Oregon. Dallas just added our wedding photos. |
